Part of what makes the tower so photogenic is a detail most visitors never think about: it's repainted roughly every seven years, a cycle the Tower's own operators have followed since 1899, using about 60 tonnes of paint each time across 50 specially trained painters. The current shade — a warm yellow-brown — is the same color Gustave Eiffel himself chose back in 1907, reapplied most recently in time for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The structure underneath that paint was raised in just over two years, between 1887 and 1889, for that year's Exposition Universelle, and its iron lattice design is exactly what gives it such a distinctive silhouette in photos from almost any angle in the city.
