Chartres Cathedral holds UNESCO World Heritage status, and it's widely regarded by art and architecture historians as one of the finest and best-preserved examples of French Gothic architecture — largely because the cathedral, built mostly in the early 13th century after a fire destroyed an earlier structure, survived the centuries since with remarkably little alteration compared to many of its peers.
Its stained glass is the real draw for many visitors. Chartres retains an exceptional amount of its original 12th- and 13th-century glass, including the deep, saturated blue that's become so associated with the cathedral it's often called 'Chartres blue' — a color that later glassmakers have never fully been able to replicate, despite centuries of attempts.
The cathedral was also a genuine medieval pilgrimage site, drawing visitors for centuries partly due to a relic believed to be the veil of the Virgin Mary, kept there since the 9th century. That pilgrimage history is part of why the building's layout and scale feel designed for crowds of visitors passing through, not just a local congregation gathering on Sundays.
