Overview

A focused private trip from Asunción through Paraguay's colonial mission towns and UNESCO-listed Jesuit ruins, finishing with a full day at Iguazu Falls.

This route runs south from Asunción through Paraguay's colonial Jesuit mission towns before crossing briefly into Argentina and Brazil for a single day at Iguazu Falls — every night on the route is confirmed in whichever country you're actually in that day, and the trip returns you to Paraguay before flying home.

Highlights

  • Day 1 — Asunción to Santa María de Fe Depart Asunción and travel south through Paraguay's colonial villages, stopping at the 1600s Franciscan church in Yaguarón, known for its carved and painted Guaraní woodwork, then continue through San Miguel and San Ignacio Guazú before overnighting in the mission village of Santa María de Fe.
  • Day 2 — Santa María de Fe Spend the day exploring this restored Jesuit mission village on foot, visiting its museum of colonial religious art and taking an optional ox-cart ride through the surrounding countryside, with an afternoon option to see the beach at Carmen del Paraná or the partially restored ruins at Jesús de Tavarangue.
  • Day 3 — Jesuit Ruins, Yerba Mate & the Border Visit the UNESCO World Heritage ruins of La Santísima Trinidad del Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangue, the two best-preserved Jesuit reduction sites in Paraguay, then tour a working yerba mate plantation to see how the leaf is harvested and processed before continuing to the Triple Frontier area.
  • Day 4 — Iguazu Falls Spend a full day at Iguazu Falls, walking the Upper and Lower Circuit trails and the catwalk over the Devil's Throat, with time at the Triple Frontier viewpoint where Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil meet before your onward transfer.

The Jesuit reductions were self-contained mission towns that brought Indigenous Guaraní communities into a church-centered colonial settlement. The reduction of Jesús was founded in 1685 and relocated to its present site in Itapúa in 1760; when the Jesuits were expelled from the Spanish colonies in 1767, its church was still unfinished and slowly fell into ruin.

La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangüe together became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Trinidad is the more complete of the two, while Jesús shows how the work was left half-built when the Jesuits were forced out.
