Panzano in Chianti sits above a valley locals call the Conca d'Oro, the "golden basin" — a name that originally had nothing to do with wine. For centuries this was one of the most productive wheat-growing areas in this part of Tuscany, prized when bread was essential daily nutrition; it was only in the years after the Second World War that wheat gave way to the olive oil and wine the valley is known for today. Panzano's own castle has been documented since the 11th century and still carries sections of its medieval walls, despite heavy damage in the 1260 Battle of Montaperti.
That same valley has since become something unusual in Italian wine country: nearly all of its roughly 25 wineries in the Panzano sub-zone are certified organic, making it one of the first organic winemaking districts in Italy. Visiting one such estate directly, with the winery itself walking you through where the wine is made and rested, gives a close look at what that organic commitment actually looks like on the ground.
Five wines spanning Chianti Classico through Super Tuscan, rosé, and sparkling styles, tasted on a terrace overlooking the Conca d'Oro's vineyards and paired with Tuscan cured meats, pecorino, and bruschetta, turns the visit into a proper sit-down tasting rather than a quick pour-and-go.
