Panama City's skyline is genuinely one of the most striking in Central America — nearly 80 high-rises, some topping 70 stories, packed into a compact city of under a million people. Most of that growth happened fast: the building boom really took off after 1999, when the United States handed over the Panama Canal and the surrounding Canal Zone to Panama, opening up land and capital for the rapid, concentrated vertical development that's earned the city comparisons, in travel and business press, to much larger global skylines.
Seen from the air, that density becomes obvious in a way it isn't from the ground: the cluster of towers along the Bahía de Panamá coastline, the real route of the Panama Canal cutting through the landscape, and the Amador Causeway — built from rock excavated during the canal's own construction, now linking the mainland to a string of small islands — are all visible together in a single sweep.
