Pipeline Road earns its unglamorous name honestly. It was built during World War II as an emergency fuel route, laid down in 1943 so oil could be moved across the isthmus by pipeline if the canal itself were ever sabotaged, sparing tankers from having to transit a waterway the US considered a wartime target. The road that once protected fuel supplies now exists almost entirely for birders, running roughly 17.5 kilometers through old-growth and secondary lowland rainforest inside Soberanía National Park.
What's made it famous isn't a single rare bird — it's sheer density. For twenty years, from 1975 to 1995, the Christmas Bird Count circle covering this stretch of central Panama held the world record for the most species counted in a single day, peaking at 357 species in one 24-hour count. Other Neotropical countries eventually overtook the record once they began running their own counts across more varied terrain, but Panama's circles here still regularly turn up 300-plus species in a single day, and the road's overall life list exceeds 400 recorded species — numbers that put it among the handful of sites worldwide a serious birder plans an itinerary around.
Soberanía National Park itself is part of what makes this possible: it's genuine, intact lowland rainforest sitting right at the edge of the canal watershed, close enough to a major capital city to reach in well under an hour, which is unusually rare for primary forest this rich anywhere in the world.
