About This Tour
A dedicated, walking-only private tour of Casco Antiguo (Casco Viejo), Panama City's UNESCO-listed colonial old town, with a knowledgeable local guide. This private tour is dedicated entirely to Casco Antiguo, giving it more time than the brief stop most combination tours allow — a knowledgeable guide walks you through the old town's colonial streets, plazas, and historic buildings at a relaxed pace.
Casco Antiguo (also called Casco Viejo) is Panama City's second incarnation. After Henry Morgan's raid destroyed the original settlement — known today as Panama Viejo — in 1671, Spanish authorities relocated the city about 8 kilometers (5 miles) southwest to a peninsula that could be walled for defense, a precaution the undefended original never had. The new, fortified city is traditionally dated to around 1673, and its colonial street grid and many of its buildings survive largely intact today, which is what this tour spends a full 3 hours walking.
The old town's heritage protection has a two-part history worth knowing: the Historic District of Panamá was first inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, and in 2003 the listing was extended to formally include the Panama Viejo ruins as well, so Casco Antiguo and the older settlement it replaced are now recognized together as a single combined heritage site.
Because this tour is dedicated entirely to the old town rather than splitting time with the canal or other city sights, your guide can give its colonial streets, restored plazas, churches, and balconied buildings more depth and a more relaxed pace than the brief stop most combination tours allow — useful whether this is your main reason for visiting Panama City or simply the part of a shorter trip you most want to get right.
