Palazzo Vecchio's story starts in 1299, when architect Arnolfo di Cambio began building it as Florence's new town hall, deliberately constructed over the ruins of homes belonging to a rival political family so they could never be rebuilt on the same ground. The main facade and tower were essentially finished by 1302, remarkably fast for a building of this scale, though later additions continued for centuries, right through to modifications made in 1588.
The building's most dramatic room, the Salone dei Cinquecento, was built in 1494 under the reformer Savonarola as a meeting hall for the Great Council of the new Florentine Republic. Both Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo were commissioned to paint rival battle frescoes on its walls, and both projects were abandoned unfinished. When Cosimo I de' Medici later took over the palace and had Giorgio Vasari redecorate the hall, some researchers believe Leonardo's lost mural may still survive, hidden behind the wall Vasari built in front of it, a mystery that remains genuinely unresolved and actively debated among scholars.
Later, as a Medici residence under Cosimo I and his wife Eleonora of Toledo from around 1540, the palace gained the frescoed apartments and state rooms your guide walks you through today, alongside its long earlier history as civic headquarters and, at various points, a holding place for political prisoners.
