Arnolfo's Tower rises 94 meters above the palace, and reaching the top means climbing roughly 233 steps, a steady but not overly strenuous ascent for a reasonably fit visitor. The tower and the palace's main facade were largely finished by 1302, just a few years after construction began in 1299 under architect Arnolfo di Cambio, for whom the tower is named.
Partway up, the climb passes a small, deliberately cramped stone cell known as the Alberghetto, rediscovered by an architect in 1814 after it had been sealed off and forgotten. Two of Florence's most famous figures were imprisoned here, decades apart: Cosimo de' Medici the Elder in 1433, accused of plotting against the republic before being exiled, and the firebrand friar Girolamo Savonarola in 1498, held here while awaiting the execution that would follow in Piazza della Signoria below.
From the top, the view takes in the Duomo's dome, Giotto's bell tower, and the rooftops of the historic center spread out in every direction, a vantage point that makes the climb worthwhile even before you learn who else once sat in that tiny cell on the way up.
