Olympic National Park contains several ecosystems in one park, and UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site in 1981. The Hoh Rainforest is among the largest temperate rainforests in the United States and receives about 140 inches of precipitation a year. Sitka spruce and western hemlock draped in moss define the Hall of Mosses, an 0.8-mile loop.
On the coast, Second Beach near La Push reaches the sea over a one-mile trail from the Quileute reservation. Offshore sea stacks known as the Quillayute Needles rise from the surf, and tide pools between the rocks reward a low-tide visit; your guide checks tide charts in advance for exactly this reason. The park's wilderness coast stretches about 73 miles.
Lake Crescent, a glacier-carved lake, is the third ecosystem. Its official depth is 624 feet, though a 2013 to 2014 survey measured about 596 feet. Two types of trout found only here, including the Beardslee trout, are among the lake's best known features.
