A private walking tour through Oaxaca City's street-art neighborhoods with a working local artist as your guide, covering the murals, stencils, and social history behind Oaxaca's distinctive urban art scene.
Oaxaca has one of Mexico's most politically charged and visually striking street-art scenes, much of it tracing back to the collectives (like ASARO, the Assembly of Revolutionary Artists of Oaxaca) that emerged from the city's 2006 social movement. Your guide is a working local artist who explains the symbolism, techniques, and history behind the murals and stencils you pass, including some of their own work.

About This Tour
Oaxaca's modern street art is closely tied to events of 2006, when a teachers' strike and the violence that followed drew in the Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca, or APPO. Art students who had made banners for marches then formalized as ASARO in the fall of 2006.
ASARO is a collective of roughly 20 members working in stencils, linocut and woodblock prints, murals and wheatpaste. Its prints were made as tools of communication on human rights and inequality rather than for the art market, and members traditionally worked without individual credit.
Seeing the work with a working artist matters because the symbols are often political and local. Some references touch on real, painful history, so a guide who can explain the context respectfully makes the difference between decoration and meaning.
