About This Tour
A private half-day visit to San Bartolo Coyotepec, the town just outside Oaxaca City known for barro negro — the distinctive burnished black clay pottery shaped and fired using techniques passed down through generations of local families. Before the 1950s, much of San Bartolo Coyotepec's pottery came out of the kiln a dull grey. Doña Rosa Real, born around 1900 in the town, found that burnishing the nearly dry clay with a quartz stone, then firing at a slightly lower temperature, left a shiny black finish. Her son Valente Nieto and later family members continued the work.
The craft itself is much older: barro negro has been part of Central Valleys pottery for centuries, tied to Zapotec and Mixtec traditions, but the lustrous version most people picture is largely a 20th-century development.
A quartz stone does the burnishing, not glaze, which is why the surface feels smooth and cool. Watching it done by hand, vessel by vessel, shows how much of the shine depends on timing before firing.
