About This Tour
A private half-day visit to Monte Albán, the 2,500-year-old hilltop capital of the Zapotec civilization and a UNESCO World Heritage Site overlooking the Oaxaca Valley. Your private guide walks you through Monte Albán's great plaza, ball court, and carved stone monuments, pacing the visit around your own interests rather than a fixed group schedule. You can linger at the observatory platform, ask questions about Zapotec history, and take the time you want for photos before heading back down into the city.
Monte Albán was founded around 500 BC, toward the end of the Middle Formative period, and grew into the capital of a large Zapotec-led polity that dominated much of the Oaxacan highlands. Its builders leveled the mountaintop itself, carving terraces, platforms and plazas out of the ridge above the valley floor.
The Danzantes, the carved stone slabs your guide will point out, were long assumed to show dancers. Scholars now widely read them as mutilated captives, which is a good example of how the site's story has changed as archaeology has advanced.
The site is listed by UNESCO together with the historic centre of Oaxaca, a joint inscription dating to 1987. That pairing is apt: the hilltop capital and the Spanish colonial city of Antequera, founded in 1529, are the two halves of Oaxaca's layered past, and the half-day format lets you see the first before returning to the second.
