About This Tour
A private walk through Jalatlaco and Xochimilco, two historic Oaxaca City neighborhoods known for their brightly painted colonial houses, street murals, and the old aqueduct and Cruz de Piedra monument. Jalatlaco carries a Nahuatl name, and accounts of its founding vary, with some sources pointing to the late 15th century under Mexica expansion and others to 1524. In 2023 it was named Oaxaca City's first Barrio Mágico. Its 17th-century church and shaded plaza give it a village feel inside the city.
Xochimilco's arches belonged to the San Felipe aqueduct, built from baked clay brick in the mid-18th century to carry water to the city. The barrio's public square, the Plazuela de la Cruz de Piedra, takes its name from the large cross at its centre.
Neither barrio is a museum piece. Both are lived-in residential areas where murals, small cafes and bakeries sit alongside family homes, which is why a slow, private pace suits the walk.
