Castle Hill's real story runs far deeper than its current life as a park. A Greek settlement called Nikaïa was established on the hill as early as the 5th century BC, later occupied by Ligurian Celts and then the Romans. After a Franco-Turkish naval force besieged Nice in 1543, the Duke of Savoy, Emmanuel Philibert, turned the entire hilltop into a fortified citadel, with bastions and defences added through the 16th and 17th centuries. It didn't survive France's ambitions: French troops laid siege in both 1691 and 1705, finally capturing the fortress, and in 1706 Louis XIV ordered it demolished outright. Archaeological excavations on the hill have since uncovered the real remains of dwellings, warehouses, and workshops destroyed in that 1691 siege.
In 1822, the town council turned the ruined hilltop into a landscaped public park, importing exotic plants, laying romantic paths, and even building faux ruins alongside the genuine archaeological finds. It remains Nice's most celebrated public garden today, and the sweeping panorama from the top — over the Baie des Anges and the rooftops of the Old Town — is the real reward of the climb.
Down at street level, Cours Saleya has its own documented history: the fruit-and-vegetable market opened here in 1861, with a flower market following soon after, and in 1897 Nice opened the world's first wholesale cut-flower market on this very square. Flowers grown in the surrounding hills were shipped by rail across France and Europe for nearly a century — famously including two full train wagons that Tsar Nicholas II of Russia reportedly ordered after watching Nice's flower parade, said to have reached him in Russia within a day and a half.
