Mont Boron, the hill this ride climbs, is capped by the real Fort du Mont Alban — a 16th-century military fortification built between 1557 and 1560 on the orders of Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy, following plans by military engineer Domenico Ponsello. Positioned at roughly 220 metres of altitude specifically to control the approach between Nice and the harbour at Villefranche-sur-Mer, it remains one of the best-preserved examples of mid-16th-century military architecture in France, and still commands the same panoramic views — west over the Baie des Anges, east over Villefranche and the Italian Riviera — that made it strategically valuable in the first place.
Villefranche-sur-Mer's own harbour below is real and unusually significant: one of the deepest natural harbours on the Mediterranean, deep and sheltered enough that it served as the Savoy region's principal commercial port — and its wartime naval port for roughly four centuries — before Nice's own port even opened in the 17th century.
A local-specialty tasting on this coastline often draws on produce genuinely rooted in this exact landscape. Nice has its own small wine appellation, Bellet, one of the smallest AOCs in France at roughly 50 to 60 hectares and the only one located entirely within a single city's limits; vines have grown on these hillsides since Greek settlers planted them in the 5th century BC, and today's Bellet wines are made largely from local grape varieties like Braquet, Folle Noire, and Rolle by just a handful of small, often family-run vineyards.
