The Promenade des Anglais takes its name from the English community that financed its construction. After a harsh winter in 1820, when a poor harvest had left many local families out of work, the Reverend Lewis Way — a senior figure in Nice's Anglican congregation — paid to have a proper coastal path built along the seafront. Locals first called it the "Camin deis Anglés," the English Way, before it was officially rechristened the Promenade des Anglais in 1860. Today it stretches some seven kilometres, from Nice's airport in the west to the Castle Hill headland in the east.
Step back from that grand seafront into Vieux Nice, and the real history shifts entirely. Until 1860, the County of Nice belonged not to France but to the Kingdom of Sardinia and the House of Savoy — a rule that lasted for more than five centuries. The Treaty of Turin, signed that March, transferred Nice to France, a change confirmed by a popular plebiscite the following month. That long Savoy-Italian chapter is still legible in the Old Town's real architecture today: the narrow, shuttered lanes and tall ochre- and pastel-painted buildings your guide leads you through on foot feel distinctly more Ligurian-Italian than French — because for most of their existence, they were.
This private walk is built around that contrast — the wide, 19th-century elegance of the Promenade on one side, and the genuinely older, Italian-flavoured maze of Vieux Nice's backstreets on the other — with your guide free to take whatever hidden turns and pace suit your group alone.
