Gassin, the first of this tour's two villages, is a real hilltop stronghold first documented around 1190–1234, long nicknamed 'La Vigie du Golfe' ('watchtower of the gulf') for the sweeping views it gave over the Gulf of Saint-Tropez and the approaches pirates once used to raid the coast. Its oldest surviving features include a 13th–14th-century Saracen gate and Rue de la Tasco, the village's oldest street, with doorways dating as far back as 1422.
Ramatuelle, the second village, has been inhabited since prehistoric times; its name is thought to derive from the Arabic 'Rahmatullah' ('the mercy of God'), a trace of the Saracen forces who held this stretch of coast for close to a century before being driven out around 975 AD. Medieval ramparts and a restored windmill still stand in the village today, and roughly a fifth of the surrounding commune remains under vine.
Château Minuty, in Gassin, is a real and genuinely well-known name in Côtes de Provence rosé. Gabriel Farnet bought the estate in 1936 and replanted its vineyards after the Second World War; it was named one of 23 original Cru Classé estates of Côtes de Provence in 1955. His daughter Monique and her husband Étienne Matton took over in 1960 — Monique designed the estate's distinctive 'Flûte et Corset' bottle that year, now associated with the Minuty M rosé — and the Matton family, now in its fourth generation, still runs the property.
