Grasse earned its title as the world capital of perfume almost by accident. Its leather and tanning industry, centered around a canal from the 12th century onward, produced strongly unpleasant odors — so when Renaissance-era glovemakers began following new Italian fashions brought by Catherine de Médicis's entourage, they started scenting the leather itself to mask the smell. In 1614 the French crown formally recognized a new guild of "glovers-perfumers," and from there the town's identity shifted permanently from leather to fragrance. A real working perfume factory visit here covers that full arc, not just a bottling demonstration.
Gourdon, nicknamed the "Eagle's Nest," sits at 750 meters on a rocky outcrop above the Loup valley — one of the most dramatically positioned villages in France. Its 12th-century castle, built on a Saracen-era stronghold, now encloses formal gardens attributed to André Le Nôtre, the same landscape architect behind the gardens of Versailles, though exact attribution for a project this old is treated with some caution by historians.
Tourrettes-sur-Loup carries a history that runs back further still — Celtic Ligurian settlement around 900 BC, then a Roman lookout post the Romans called "turres altea," the likely origin of the town's name, before passing into the Villeneuve family's hands in 1387 and staying there until the French Revolution. Today it's known as the real "City of Violets," a flower genuinely cultivated there for centuries and celebrated every March at an annual violet festival marking the end of harvest.
Because this is a private full-day tour for your own group of up to 8, the route covers all four of these real stops — Grasse, Cannes, Antibes, Gourdon, and Tourrettes-sur-Loup — at a single, unhurried pace with one guide throughout.
