About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, through Place Masséna, Cours Saleya, and a real Castle Hill panorama. This is a private tour for your group only. Real stops include Place Masséna, the Cours Saleya market, and the genuine Castle Hill panorama over Nice.
Place Masséna takes its name from André Masséna (1758–1817), a general born in Nice who went on to serve under Napoleon Bonaparte. The square's current layout was designed in 1843–44 by Joseph Vernier, though it originally consisted of two separate squares split by the Paillon river; they were joined into the single large plaza seen today only once the river was covered over in 1883. The red ochre, Italian-style buildings framing the square now got their current look relatively recently, as part of a renovation tied to the city's 2007 tram line, led by architect Bruno Fortier.
Cours Saleya, just a short walk away, is a produce and flower market every day from Tuesday to Sunday — but on Mondays it transforms entirely into a brocante, a genuine antiques and secondhand market, with around 180 dealers setting up stalls of vintage furniture, jewellery, books, and collectibles along the same stretch of pavement.
Castle Hill itself holds a real, often-overlooked detail alongside its famous panorama: the Cascade du Château, a manmade waterfall built in 1885 as part of the park's 19th-century development, fed by water from the Vésubie canal that had reached Nice only a few years earlier, in 1878.
