The Prince's Palace of Monaco began life in 1191 as a Genoese fortress, built on the same rocky promontory the Grimaldi family has occupied since François Grimaldi captured it in 1297. What makes the palace unusual in European terms isn't just its age — it's that the same family has lived there continuously for more than seven centuries, with no second residence to fall back on. Later princes, Honoré I and Honoré II among them, brought in architects to transform the fortress gradually into the Italian-inspired palace that stands today, which is why a genuine interior visit (not just the courtyard or the Changing of the Guard outside) covers both defensive medieval stonework and far more ornate later state rooms in the same building.
The car collection is a separate, more personal story. Prince Rainier III started collecting vintage cars as a private hobby in the late 1950s, and by the time the garage at the Palace could no longer hold what had become roughly a hundred vehicles, he opened the collection to the public in 1993. It moved into a new, purpose-built setting in July 2022, next to Monaco's Rainier III nautical stadium. The real range spans a 1903 De Dion-Bouton through marques like Hispano-Suiza, Bugatti, Ferrari, and Lamborghini, up to a 2013 Formula 1 Lotus — plus genuine competition cars from the Monte Carlo Rally and Monaco Grand Prix, and the ceremonial horse-drawn carriages still used for royal occasions.
Pairing real palace-interior access with the Prince's own car collection in one private day is a genuinely different combination from the standard Monaco sightseeing route most visitors take — one is centuries of Grimaldi dynastic history, the other is a single prince's personal passion, and this tour is built around seeing both properly rather than glimpsing either from outside.
