About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, to the genuine Valensole Plateau lavender fields and the real village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie. This is a private tour for your group only. Real stops include the Valensole Plateau's genuine lavender fields (seasonal) and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie village.
Moustiers-Sainte-Marie has been known for its faïence — glazed, hand-painted ceramic ware — since the late 1600s. Local potter Pierre Clérissy is said to have learned the technique's milky-white enamel and cobalt-blue decoration from a monk from Faenza, Italy, around 1679 (faïence takes its name from that Italian town), and the quality was good enough that, according to local tradition, Louis XIV turned to Moustiers ware after melting down his own gold and silver tableware to pay for wars. Production actually stopped for 54 years, from 1874 to 1928, before reviving; seven workshops operate in the village today.
High above the village, a gold star hangs from a 225-meter chain strung between two cliffs. Local legend ties it to a vow made by a knight during the Crusades — that if he returned home safely, he'd dedicate a chain and star to the Madonna of Moustiers. Both have been replaced more than ten times over the centuries, most recently by helicopter.
The lavender fields on the nearby Valensole Plateau follow their own real calendar — peak bloom typically falls in the second half of June into early July, with the plants often harvested by mid-July, so the window for the deepest purple fields is genuinely narrow and worth checking before you book.
