This stretch of the French Riviera has been tied to perfume-making since the 16th century, when the hills around Grasse and villages like Èze were first prized for growing the aromatic flowers and plants that became the raw material of French scent. By the end of the 19th century, as tourism reached these hilltop villages, several established perfume houses had opened branches here specifically to show visitors how fragrance is actually made, rather than just sell the finished bottle.
Fragonard, the house most tours visit, has real roots worth knowing: it was founded in 1926 by Eugène Fuchs and named in honor of Jean-Honoré Fragonard, the Rococo painter born in Grasse in 1732. The brand's historic production building dates back even further, to 1782 — making the factory itself older than the company that now runs it. A guided visit walks through the real distillation and blending process, not a simplified tourist version of it.
