About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, with real included tickets to the genuine Marc Chagall National Museum. This is a private tour for your group only, led by a licensed guide, with real included tickets to the genuine Marc Chagall National Museum.
The Musée National Marc Chagall opened on 7 July 1973 — Chagall's own birthday — with the artist present for the inauguration. Originally named the Musée National Message Biblique Marc Chagall, it was the first monographic museum in France ever opened during an artist's own lifetime, a genuinely rare honour.
Its core collection began with a gift: in 1966, Chagall and his wife Valentina Brodsky donated the seventeen large canvases that make up his Biblical Message cycle, after Chagall reached an agreement with French Minister of Culture André Malraux to give the entire cycle to the French state specifically so a museum could be built around it. Architect André Hermant, a former collaborator of Auguste Perret and Le Corbusier, was commissioned to design the building, working closely with Chagall himself throughout.
In 1972, Chagall supplemented the donation further with preparatory works, his 1931 Bible gouaches, 105 Bible etchings and their original printing plates, lithographs, sculptures, and ceramics — and he kept adding to the collection until his death in 1985. The museum carried its original Biblical Message name until 2008, when it was renamed the Musée National Marc Chagall with the family's consent, formally widening its scope to the artist's entire body of work.
