About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, tracing Cannes' genuine Film Festival history and stunning real viewpoints. This is a private tour for your group only, led by a skilled photographer-guide. Real content traces Cannes' genuine Film Festival history and stunning viewpoints.
Cannes' film festival almost never happened the way history remembers it. France first planned to launch it in 1939, partly as a response to the Venice Film Festival having become a vehicle for Fascist and Nazi propaganda — but the opening, set for September 1, was cancelled the very same day after just one film had screened, because Germany invaded Poland that morning.
It took until 1946 for the festival to actually get underway, when France's provincial government revived the idea as a real, deliberate way to draw tourists back to a Riviera still recovering from the war. That first "Festival de Cannes" opened on 20 September 1946 at the former Cannes Casino, with 18 nations represented and 21 countries eventually presenting films.
Tracing that real history on foot, alongside the city's most photographed viewpoints, with a skilled photographer-guide means the walk covers both the festival's genuine, often-overlooked wartime backstory and the glamour most visitors already associate with the red carpet.
As a private tour for your group alone, there's room to linger at whichever of these real landmarks — the old Casino site, the Palais des Festivals, or La Croisette itself — holds your attention longest.
