Menton's real claim to fame goes back to the 19th century, when its sheltered microclimate — mild enough that lemon trees thrive through the winter — made it the lemon capital of Europe. That citrus heritage is still central to the town's identity today, most visibly in its Fête du Citron, a festival built around giant fruit sculptures whose roots trace back to local hoteliers' winter celebrations of the 1920s and were formalized by the town in the following decade.
Èze, another real possible destination along this stretch, offers a very different kind of history: a clifftop village perched at 427 meters above the sea, inhabited since around 2000 BC and fortified in the Middle Ages against coastal raids, with a double-gated medieval entrance still standing from the 14th century.
