About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, tracing Nice's genuine street-art and urban-art scene. This is a private tour for your group only, tracing Nice's real, genuine street-art and urban-art scene — a distinct theme from the standard historic-landmark walk.
Nice's connection to street and urban art runs deeper than a typical city mural scene. Ernest Pignon-Ernest, born in Nice in 1942, is widely credited as the founding figure of urban art in France, and the city's own École de Nice movement — embodied by artist Ben Vautier's text-based interventions in public space from the 1960s onward — established an early, genuine link between Nice and art made outside gallery walls.
For decades the city was officially resistant to graffiti, but that changed during the construction of tramway line 2, when local street artists were deliberately brought in to contribute to the transit infrastructure itself. The Regards tunnel at the Nice-Centre tram station, spanning 220 metres, became one of the city's major spaces for commissioned large-scale work as a direct result.
Today the scene is anchored by the 109 cultural hub and the Whole Street collective, founded in 2015 by artists Otom and Faben, which organizes murals, workshops, and live-painting events across neighbourhoods including Raimbaldi — known for its trompe-l'œil pieces — and boulevard Vérany, home to a collective expression wall running since 2022. This walk follows that real, still-active local art scene, not a generic street-art theme borrowed from elsewhere.
