Frequently Asked Questions
No — the hike and sandboarding run at a moderate pace suited to most fitness levels, though it does involve about an hour of hiking over loose volcanic ground.
A real social-impact café in Granada staffed entirely by members of the local deaf community, where orders are placed using simple sign-language cards — a genuine, hands-on cultural stop rather than a staged photo opportunity.
La Flor Beach is a protected nesting site for olive ridley sea turtles, with mass nesting arribadas typically occurring between roughly July and January — outside that window you'll still find a quiet, undeveloped stretch of Pacific coastline.

Cerro Negro was born in 1850 when it erupted from the plain in the Maribios range, and has erupted roughly two dozen times since, making it one of Central America's youngest volcanoes. Its loose black cinder slopes are what make volcano boarding possible.
Laguna de Apoyo fills a caldera about 6 kilometres across that formed in huge eruptions roughly 21,000-25,000 years ago. The water is warm, clear and swimmable, and the crater rim is a short drive from Granada.
Café de las Sonrisas in Granada opened in 2012 and was described as the first restaurant in the Americas run by deaf and hard-of-hearing staff, who use a picture menu and teach visitors basic Nicaraguan Sign Language. La Flor Wildlife Refuge, south of San Juan del Sur, protects an arribada beach for olive ridley turtles, with nesting generally from July to February and peak in August-September.
