A genuinely off-the-beaten-path trip down the San Juan River to the edge of the Indio Maíz Biosphere Reserve, camping on a river island with a private guide for canoeing, night hikes, and wildlife spotting.
This trip runs entirely within Nicaragua, from Managua, León, or Granada down to the San Juan River on the border with Costa Rica. It is the most remote and adventure-focused of Voyzo's Nicaragua itineraries — accommodation is camping (tent or hammock) on a river island rather than hotels, which suits the boat-only access to this part of the reserve.
Highlights
Day 1 — Journey to the Reserve An early departure (around 3–4am) from Managua, León, or Granada, driving to San Carlos on Lake Nicaragua with a rest stop in Juigalpa, then a boat to El Castillo and on to the edge of the Indio Maíz Biosphere Reserve to make camp on a river island, finishing with a night boat tour.
Day 2 — Deep Jungle Exploration A morning birdwatching walk, a guided hike along the Bartola trail, swimming in jungle rivers, afternoon fishing, and a night hike through the reserve.
Day 3 — Wildlife & River Activities A morning canoe tour through the reserve's waterways spotting monkeys, caimans, toucans, and sloths, an afternoon of horseback riding, and free time for swimming or fishing.
Day 4 — Return A relaxed morning before packing up camp and retracing the route by boat to El Castillo and San Carlos, then driving back to your starting city.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
A private guide, driver, and vehicle for the entire trip, with hotels pre-arranged at every overnight stop — the pace and any optional stops can still be shaped around your group.

About This Tour

The Indio Maíz Biological Reserve was established in 1990 and covers about 2,640 square kilometres of Caribbean-slope rainforest along the San Juan River and the Costa Rican border. It begins near the Bartola River, a few miles west of El Castillo.
El Castillo's Fortress of the Immaculate Conception was completed in 1675 to defend the river route to Granada from pirate attacks. The river had long been a gateway into Nicaragua's interior and a strategic prize for Spain.
Access to the deeper reserve is by boat, which is why camping on a river island makes sense. Dawn and dusk are the best times for monkeys, toucans and caimans, and your guide's local knowledge makes the difference between hearing wildlife and seeing it.
