Ometepe is made of two volcanoes joined by a narrow isthmus: Concepción, an active cone about 1,610 metres high, and the smaller, forested Maderas at about 1,394 metres. The island sits in Lake Nicaragua, the largest lake in Central America.

Ojo de Agua is a spring-fed swimming pool whose clear water comes from underground flows off Maderas, held in cement-rimmed pools that are refreshed constantly, and it is a favourite local spot to cool off.

The Pacific side route also takes in Cerro Negro, born in 1850, and Masaya Volcano's Santiago crater, whose lava lake the Spanish called 'the Mouth of Hell'. Ometepe's slower pace gives the trip a very different rhythm from the colonial cities.
