A fast-moving introduction to Nicaragua's Pacific side, covering the colonial cities of Granada and León and the active crater of Masaya Volcano, all with your own private driver-guide from Managua.
This route stays entirely within Nicaragua's Pacific lowlands, looping out from Managua to Granada, León, and Masaya with your own private driver-guide for all three days. It shares some of the same real stops (Catarina, Masaya Volcano, Laguna de Apoyo) that also appear on Voyzo's longer 8-day Nicaragua itinerary — this shorter version is built for travelers who only have a few days rather than a full week.
Highlights
Day 1 — Granada Pick-up from your hotel in Managua or the airport, then a boat ride through the Islets of Granada on Lake Nicaragua, a guided walking tour through the colonial city, and a stop at the Mirador de Catarina for views over Laguna de Apoyo.

About This Tour

Granada was founded on April 21, 1524 by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba and is often described as Nicaragua's oldest colonial city and one of the oldest in the Americas still on its original site. Its yellow cathedral dates originally to 1583 but has been rebuilt several times, and the Convento San Francisco was first built in 1529 and later sacked, including by pirate Henry Morgan in 1679 and filibuster William Walker in 1856.
León Viejo, the original León, was founded in 1524 near Momotombo volcano and abandoned after the 1578 eruption and a 1610 earthquake. Its ruins were Nicaragua's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed in 2000.
Masaya Volcano National Park, Nicaragua's first and largest national park, centres on the Santiago crater, whose persistent lava lake and gas the Spanish named 'the Mouth of Hell'. Friar Francisco de Bobadilla placed a cross at the crater lip in the 1520s (sources vary on exact date) to exorcise the devil.
