About This Tour
A private 3 to 5 hour SUV tour through Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake. Stops include Inniskillin Wines, Maple Leaf Place's maple-syrup tasting room, the Sir Adam Beck Generating Station and the tiny 1964 Living Water Wayside Chapel, with pass-bys of the Falls, the Butterfly Conservatory and Queenston Heights. It's a focused half-day drive rather than an all-day itinerary.
Inniskillin Wines, the winery stop on this drive, was founded in 1975 by Donald Ziraldo and Karl Kaiser on the first post-prohibition winery license issued in the region. The pair made Canada's first commercially significant icewine in 1984, and it was Inniskillin's 1989 Vidal icewine that won the Grand Prix d'Honneur at Vinexpo in 1991 — the result widely credited with putting Canadian icewine on the world map.
Maple Leaf Place runs a genuine 5,000-square-foot maple syrup factory and tasting room, with free syrup-making demonstrations and a flight that walks through Ontario's three real syrup grades — golden, amber, and dark — each tasting noticeably different depending on when in the late-winter tapping season it was drawn, and genuinely different again from the more familiar Quebec syrup most Canadians grow up with.
The Sir Adam Beck Generating Station you pass started construction in 1917 as the Queenston-Chippawa Hydroelectric Plant, the first large hydroelectric project of its kind anywhere in the world; it was renamed in 1950 for Adam Beck, the former Niagara Falls mayor who championed public power ownership in Ontario. Together with its companion station built in the 1950s, the two now generate close to 2,000 megawatts from this one stretch of river.
The Living Water Wayside Chapel, this drive's smallest and strangest stop, measures just 72 square feet and seats no more than six people — built in 1964 by the Christian Reformed Church, it's widely cited as the smallest chapel in Canada and stays open 24 hours a day with no booking required.
