About This Tour
A private half-day: Queenston Heights, Inniskillin Wines and Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake. The day pairs the 1812 battlefield history at Queenston Heights and the Brock Monument with the wine country around Niagara-on-the-Lake. Tell us if you'd like to lean toward one or the other.
Queenston Heights isn't just a scenic overlook — it's the actual ground where Major-General Isaac Brock was killed on October 13, 1812, leading a charge to retake a gun position the invading Americans had captured. Brock became such a unifying figure for Upper Canada that the first monument to him, a 135-foot Tuscan column, was completed in 1824 — only to be blown up by anti-British agitators in 1840. The replacement standing today, built of Queenston limestone and completed in 1859, rises 56 metres (185 feet), with a 235-step spiral staircase inside and a 4.8-metre stone statue of Brock on top.
Inniskillin Wines, the tasting stop, was founded in 1975 by Donald Ziraldo and Karl Kaiser on the first post-prohibition winery license issued in the region. It took until 1984 for Kaiser to produce the winery's first icewine, made from netted Vidal grapes — and it was Inniskillin's 1989 Vidal icewine that won the Grand Prix d'Honneur at Vinexpo in 1991, the win widely credited with putting Canadian icewine on the international map.
The Sir Adam Beck Generating Station you pass en route was built between 1917 and 1925 as the Queenston-Chippawa Hydroelectric Plant, the first large hydroelectric project of its kind anywhere in the world at the time. It was renamed in 1950 to honour Adam Beck, the Niagara Falls mayor and power-commission chairman who championed public hydro ownership; alongside its companion station built in the 1950s, the two now generate close to 2,000 megawatts from the same stretch of river.
