Niagara Helicopters has been flying sightseeing routes over the Falls since its heliport first opened in 1964, which makes it the oldest continuously operating aerial tourism company in Canada — over 60 years in business by now. The company has changed hands a few times (Pan Air bought it in 1978, Swiss-born pilot Ruedi Hafen and partners took over in 1985), and the fleet has evolved too: a single four-seat Bell JetRanger in the early years, four Bell 407s by the mid-1990s, and since 2015, a fleet of Airbus H130 helicopters, the aircraft most flights use today.
The flight path itself crosses real, working wine country, not just scenery — the vineyards around Niagara-on-the-Lake sit on the Niagara Peninsula, Canada's largest wine-growing appellation, where the Niagara Escarpment and the lake's own moderating effect create a patchwork of microclimates you can actually pick out from the air by how the vine rows are oriented.
