The cruise this evening is timed around the Niagara Falls Illumination Board's lighting show, a tradition that goes back to 1925, when the board first made the Falls' nighttime illumination a permanent, nightly fixture using 24 carbon arc searchlights — the forerunner of the LED system in use today. Fireworks over the water run on a seasonal pattern rather than every single night: typically nightly through the height of summer, weekends only in spring and fall, and a separate schedule tied to the winter Festival of Lights in December and January, so we confirm the current calendar against your dates before booking.
The boat itself operates as Niagara City Cruises, the company that's run the Canadian-side dock since 2014, when it took over from the Maid of the Mist after that operator's 167-year run on this side of the river ended in October 2013. The Maid of the Mist name still sails, just from the New York side now.
Skylon Tower, where the evening begins, opened in 1965 after 38 straight days of continuous concrete pouring using a “slip form” construction technique — an engineering detail that let builders finish a 775-foot-above-the-Falls observation deck in a fraction of the time conventional construction would have taken.
