The Bluebird Cafe, one of this tour's named stops, opened on June 3, 1982, in Green Hills, founded by former waitress Amy Kurland with an inheritance from her grandmother. It seats only about 90 people, and its first "in the round" songwriter show took place on March 29, 1985, the format that made its name. In 2004 a 14-year-old Taylor Swift played there and was seen by the head of a label who went on to sign her. Having a working songwriter as your guide makes that world feel less like trivia and more like a neighbor's story.
Music Row, a short drive from Centennial Park, began in 1954 when Owen and Harold Bradley converted a house and a surplus Quonset hut on 16th Avenue into a studio. RCA built its own Studio B nearby in 1957, and the Bradleys sold the hut to Columbia Records in 1962. A guide who actually writes and plays can explain how a song moves from a writing room to those studios in a way a recording does not.
Marathon Village is the surprise on the route: the Marathon Motor Works built cars in Nashville from about 1910 to 1914, and the complex is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The private performance from your guide is the centerpiece, and the stops around it are chosen to give it context.
