The Cumberland River, which runs through Nashville, is about 688 miles long and drains roughly 18,000 square miles of southern Kentucky and north-central Tennessee. It was named for the Duke of Cumberland in 1750 by surveyor Dr. Thomas Walker.
The city itself started on its bluffs, when James Robertson's party arrived on December 24, 1779. Today the river is a series of dammed lakes, and the stretch near Nashville is part of Cheatham Reservoir, a 7,450-acre impoundment running downstream from the city.
A floating tiki boat is a modern way to enjoy a very old waterway; the swimming cove, the BYOB charter format, and the licensed captain are what shape the afternoon.
