The Frist Art Museum building was constructed in 1933-34 as Nashville's main post office, built by the Treasury Department. It was repurposed as an art center in the late 1990s and opened to the public on April 8, 2001, a good example of how downtown reuses its old buildings.
The National Museum of African American Music, at Fifth Avenue and Broadway, opened in January 2021 (sources differ on the exact day of the opening versus the general public opening). It sits within a few blocks of Honky Tonk Highway, which makes the contrast between genres easy to see on foot.
The Ryman Auditorium, opened in 1892 as the Union Gospel Tabernacle, anchors the route's music-history thread, and a two-hour pace leaves time for photos at each exterior.
