Nashville's story begins in the winter of 1779-80. James Robertson led a party of frontiersmen that reached the Cumberland River bluffs around Christmas 1779, and John Donelson's flotilla of about thirty flatboats carrying families arrived on April 24, 1780, reuniting the settlement. The log stockade of Fort Nashborough that grew there was the seed of the city.
A tour built on 250-plus years of history works best when it connects that frontier start to later chapters. Printer's Alley, for example, became Nashville's printing and publishing center from around 1830, and by 1915 held two large newspapers, ten print shops and thirteen publishers before reinventing itself as a nightclub district.
The Grand Ole Opry thread runs through the same story. The show was based at the Ryman Auditorium from 1943 to 1974, and a driver-guide in a private SUV can link these sites in one loop, which is how hidden corners fit alongside the well-known ones.
