Whale watching out of Nanaimo takes place in the Strait of Georgia, part of the Salish Sea, where the Gulf Islands break up the open water into sheltered channels.
The orcas most often seen in the Salish Sea today are Bigg's killer whales, formerly known as 'transient' orcas, a name now falling out of favour. Researchers recorded 951 unique Bigg's sightings in inland waters in 2021, a 27 percent increase on the previous record of 747 in 2019, and humpback calves have also been documented in the region in growing numbers.
