Before the glass factories arrived in 1291, Murano already had a church with real age to it: the Basilica dei Santi Maria e Donato, founded in the 7th century and rebuilt into its current Veneto-Byzantine form between 1125 and 1141. Its best-known feature is a 12th-century mosaic floor, laid using the opus sectile and opus tessellatum techniques, incorporating fragments of old Murano glass itself into geometric patterns and medieval scenes — making it one of the oldest and most distinctive churches anywhere in the Venetian lagoon.
At the glass factory afterward, you'll watch the modern side of the island's history — a furnace heated to around 1,400°C, and a master glassblower shaping molten glass on the end of a blowpipe using a technique called soffiatura, turning and blowing in the same motion to form the piece before it cools.
A private one-way water taxi over means you skip the crowds that build up on the public routes during peak hours, leaving you with a relaxed stretch of time to browse the showroom and compare pieces without feeling rushed before heading back.
