About This Tour

A private boat tour of Murano, Burano, and Torcello, taking in a glassblowing demonstration, Burano's lacework traditions, and Torcello's origin story as Venice's founding settlement. A private boat tour to three lagoon islands, watching a glassblowing demonstration in Murano, discovering Burano's lacework traditions, and learning about the origins of Venice in Torcello.

Torcello didn't just predate Venice — for a long stretch of the early Middle Ages, it was more powerful than it. At its height the island supported something like 20,000 people, a proper trading town with its own bishop, while the settlement that would become Venice was still a comparatively minor foothold in the lagoon. Plague, silting canals, and the malaria that followed eventually pushed almost everyone off the island; by the time the Venetian Republic was dissolved in 1797, Torcello's population had collapsed to around 300, and it never recovered.

Murano's glassmakers, meanwhile, owe their island's name recognition partly to secrecy. Officially relocated there in 1291 to cut fire risk to Venice's wooden buildings, the glassmaking guilds also found that concentrating every furnace on one island made it far easier to keep their techniques — closely guarded trade secrets passed down within families for generations — from ever leaking out to rival glassmaking cities elsewhere in Europe.

This private boat tour ties all three islands together in one trip: a live glassblowing demonstration in Murano, Burano's lace-making tradition and candy-colored streets, and Torcello's quiet, half-forgotten origin story, with a private boat and guide throughout rather than a shared ferry schedule dictating the pace.
