Montevideo's classic city loop usually threads together the Old City, Plaza Independencia and the Rambla. The Palacio Salvo, completed in 1928, rises 105 metres on the plaza and was briefly the tallest building in Latin America.
The Rambla runs roughly 22 kilometres along the coast and is widely called the longest continuous sidewalk in the world; it was conceived in the 1920s and gives the city its seaside identity.
