Pizzorno Family Estates was founded in 1910 by Próspero José Pizzorno and is based at Canelón Chico, in the Canelones department about 20 kilometres north of Montevideo. It is one of Uruguay's older exporting wineries and a well-visited stop for cruise passengers.
Tannat came to Uruguay in the 1870s with the Basque immigrant Pascual Harriague, and the country is now the world's largest producer of the grape. It is the only country where Tannat is the most planted variety, so tasting it here means tasting something that belongs to the place.
Mercado del Puerto, in a building dating to 1868, and Plaza Independencia are close to the port, so even a tight cruise schedule leaves time to see the market and the central square before the optional winery trip.
