About This Tour

The Palacio Salvo was finished in 1928 and stands 105 metres high across 27 floors, designed by the Italian architect Mario Palanti. For a short time it was the tallest building in Latin America, and at completion it was the tallest reinforced concrete structure in the world.
The Solís Theatre opened in 1856 and was designed by Carlo Zucchi; it is Uruguay's most important theatre. The Artigas Mausoleum on Plaza Independencia opened in 1977, with the national hero's remains in an underground chamber beneath the statue and a pair of ceremonial guards, the Blandengues de Artigas, standing watch.
On the optional 3-hour extension, the Mercado del Puerto, whose open iron building dates to 1868, is now the city's best-known cluster of grill restaurants. The nearby Carnival Museum documents candombe, murga and Uruguay's Carnaval, which is celebrated for a very long season.
