Bodega Bouza was founded in 2000 by Juan and Elisa Bouza on a roughly 70-hectare property in Melilla, about 15 minutes northwest of Montevideo. The family had run a successful food and beverage business before turning to wine.
The estate is known for more than 30 restored vintage cars and motorcycles from the family collection, dating from the 1920s onward, displayed around the property. Bouza is also credited with the first commercial plantings of Albariño in Uruguay, around 2002, which later became the country's second signature white.
Tannat remains the headline red, and the combination of a modern winery, a classic-car collection and a gourmet lunch makes this a half-day that reaches beyond the usual city stops.
