Cola de Caballo, the 'Horsetail' waterfall, falls about 25 metres in a thin cascade whose fan shape gives it its name. It lies in the town of Villa de Santiago, in the mountains south of Monterrey, and can run strongly after rain and thinly in dry months, so its look varies by season.
Presa de la Boca, formally the Rodrigo Gómez dam, was built between 1961 and 1963 and holds around 40 million cubic metres of water as one of Monterrey's water sources. Its level has dropped sharply in dry years, so the view you get depends on recent rainfall.
Santiago was designated a Pueblo Mágico by Mexico's tourism secretariat in 2006, a federal label for towns with notable heritage and character; it is described locally as the first in Nuevo León. Its cobbled centre makes a relaxed end to the day.
