Mombacho rises about 1,344 metres beside Granada and is a dormant stratovolcano with two craters covered in cloud forest. Its only reported historic activity was in 1570, when a debris avalanche destroyed a village on the south flank.
An older collapse of the northeast flank, thousands of years ago, sent debris into Lake Nicaragua and created the Isletas de Granada, a cluster of roughly 365 small islands visible from the higher trails on clear days.
The summit's cloud forest is cool and damp and holds orchids, ferns and plants and animals found only on the volcano, which is why the reserve is protected.
