A helicopter's real advantage over a fixed-wing flight here is the ability to slow down, hover, and bank in close over a single formation rather than flying a fixed route past it — which matters on a tour built around close-up looks at features like Gemini Bridges, two side-by-side natural rock spans roughly 80 to 100 feet wide each, with a drop of more than 160 feet to the canyon floor below. Corona Arch, another real stop on this route, is a freestanding sandstone arch about 105 feet tall with a 140-foot opening, sitting in a natural stone bowl above the Colorado River.
It's worth being precise about where this flight actually goes: Corona Arch, Gemini Bridges, and Determination Towers all sit on Bureau of Land Management land just outside Canyonlands National Park's official boundary, not inside the park itself — genuinely spectacular Moab red-rock country, but administered separately from the park land this tour's Island in the Sky views, and its views near Dead Horse Point, actually cover. Island in the Sky is the broad, roughly 2,000-foot-high mesa between the Colorado and Green Rivers that this tour's aerial route also crosses, carved out as both rivers cut the surrounding land away over a very long stretch of geologic time.
Dead Horse Point itself, which the flight passes near, takes its name from a 19th-century cowboy legend rather than a confirmed historical event: the story holds that wranglers once corralled wild mustangs on the narrow mesa point using its sheer cliffs as a natural fence, then simply left the unwanted horses behind when they moved the herd on — the animals, according to the legend, could see and smell the Colorado River far below but had no way down to it. Whether or not the full story is literally true, the real geography it's built around is genuine: the point sits roughly 2,000 feet directly above a hairpin bend in the Colorado River, exactly the kind of natural, cliff-walled corral that would have made it useful for ranching in the area in the first place.
