Minneapolis's Skyway System links 80 full downtown blocks with about 9.5 miles of enclosed pedestrian bridges, a practical response to Minnesota winters. The Chain of Lakes carries a more recent story: the lake long called Lake Calhoun was officially renamed Bde Maka Ska in 2018, restoring a Dakota name after public debate over its former namesake.
Minnehaha Falls drops 53 feet and appears in Longfellow's 1855 poem The Song of Hiawatha, while Historic Fort Snelling, begun in 1820 and completed in 1823 above the meeting of the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers, anchors the region's military and Dakota histories.
Across the river, the Minnesota State Capitol was designed by Cass Gilbert and completed in 1905; its marble dome is considered the second-largest self-supported marble dome in the world, after St. Peter's in Rome.
